This is the third suite in the set of Six Suites for Solo Cello by Ajibola Rivers, written in Eb Major. The theme of Suite III is “Celebration”. This suite is the most playful of the six. It is optimistic and energetic like the first suite, but instead of rolling out the welcome mat the third suite is passing around drinks, sharing laughs, and tearing up the dance floor at a party that has already started. Suite III features Baroque counterpoint infused with dances such as the Mambo, Tango, and Boogaloo among others.
This music was composed with the intention of expanding upon the foundation created by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello. Its rhythmic elements, expanded use of chords, and wider range of notes provide a relatively higher level of technical difficulty compared to Bach’s third cello suite. If a player is seeking an entry point, the Cha-Cha-Chá and Boogaloo I & II are the most accessible movements in this suite.
