This is the second suite in the set of Six Suites for Solo Cello by Ajibola Rivers, written in C Minor. The theme of Suite II is “Bitterness”. Much of the art that has come out of the African, Latin, and Native American communities is beautiful, positive, and optimistic. However, there are also stories and traumatic memories tied to frustrating periods in human history. Suite II provides a small commentary on the anger that festered during the worst of times and the tension that can boil over in an instant even in the best of times. Suite II features Baroque counterpoint infused with dances such as the Mambo, Blues, Cha-Cha-Chá, and Rumba Guaguancó among others.

This music was composed with the intention of expanding upon the foundation created by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello. Its rhythmic elements, expanded use of chords, wider range of notes, and pizzicato provide a relatively higher level of technical difficulty compared to Bach’s second cello suite. If a player is seeking an entry point, the Prelude, and the Mambo are the most accessible movements in this suite.
