This is the first suite in the set of Six Suites for Solo Cello by Ajibola Rivers, written in G Major. The theme of Suite I is “The Welcoming” and through this book, the composer is welcoming you to his collection. The Prelude draws inspiration from big band swing and feels like the start of a show. The other movements give an invitation into the cultures from which they are derived. Suite I features Baroque counterpoint infused with dances such as the Mambo, Blues, Cha-Cha-Chá, Highlife, and “Swing Waltzes” among others.
This music was composed with the intention of expanding upon the foundation created by Johann Sebastian Bach’s Six Suites for Solo Cello. Its rhythmic elements, expanded use of chords, and wider range of notes provide a relatively higher level of technical difficulty compared to Bach’s first cello suite. If a player is seeking an entry point, the Cha-Cha-Chá, the Blues, and Swing Waltz I & II are the most accessible movements in this suite.
